HYPNOBIRTHING

Hypnobirthing is a system of birth preparation which is overflowing with common sense.  It has become massively popular over it's 30 year history simply because it works.  It also appears to have a substantial repelling force-field around it because people hear the 'hypno' bit and think "uh uh, hippy alert" and swerve towards more 'traditional' ante-natal education.

Hypnobirthing for much more than birth . . .

At it's most basic Hypnobirthing is like a birthing bootcamp for the mind.  It's a systematic and logical approach to preparing head, heart and body for one of the most seismic events in life - becoming a parent.  Much of the 'mind-preparation' component of the course is akin to the psychology training any top athlete (or many other performers and high achievers) undertake and it's effects are felt way beyond birth.

      Hypnobirthing works!

And did I mention that it works?  I have had hundreds of mums and couples attend my courses since I trained in 2006 and, overwhelmingly, they have had positive birth experiences.  The births have taken many different forms; natural and straightforward; natural with interventions; surgical either following labour or by choice.  There is no 'best' model of birth.  When the principles and techniques taught on the Hypnobirthing course are practiced in the lead up to birth and then followed during labour it can only improve the birthing experience and outcomes.

Fear

One of the biggest stumbling blocks for many woman during pregnancy is the anxiety regarding pain and lack of control.  Lots of approaches offer solutions which include drugs, surgery and preparation for worse case-scenarios.  A Hypnobirthing preparation certainly doesn't exclude the use of drugs or surgery (both of which can be very desirable either from necessity or choice).  Where it steers away from many other ante-natal models of preparation is the focus on all the things that could go wrong - (though it provides you with the ability to remain calm so you can make the best decisions if thing do take an unplanned for turn).  It looks at the reality of childbirth in our current social and economic climate; that the majority of time, with the right conditions in place (including health, nutrition, environment, physical and mental preparation) then birth can be relatively straightforward.  It encourages you to think deeply, become informed about your choices and to take responsibility for your birth - including preparation with your birth partner (so they can advocate for you) and engagement with your caregivers (so they can support you).  And we haven't even got to the 'hypno' bit yet!

The full package

A full Hypnobirthing course is a comprehensive ante-natal education.  It will cover everything you need to have a positive experience of birth and be more prepared for the beginnings of parenthood.  If your labour takes a different turn at some point in its path from what you wanted then having the skills to keep calm and make good decisions is going to be the difference between an experience which you love to remember and one which you'll want to forget.

The 'hypno' bit

No, you won't have to quack like a duck.  Neither is it, "3, 2, 1 . . . into a trance and here's your baby!".  My hypnobirthing course has far more in common with sports or performance psychology than with stage hypnosis.  If you replace 'hypno' with 'neuroscience' then you'll have a more accurate picture of what this part of the course involves.  In short, hypnosis is something that we all do many times a day because a hypnotic state is a normal brain state.  This all too often includes 'negative trance states' (fear, anxiety, worry) which don't serve us well.  The sort of hypnotic state you'll be practicing in hypnobirthing is very relaxed yet highly focused.  You'll be learning to access a calm and peaceful state of mind, a mental state where the brain is open to absorbing new ways of thinking and learning new skills.  This will help you enormously in;

regular relaxation will help retrain your nervous system.  This means you can be calmer more often in your day to day life, which has a very potent effect on the decisions you.

It changes the way you think about your upcoming birth.  The very specific hypnotherapy sessions we'll do in class sessions work at shifting deeply held beliefs and fears which are not serving you.

- a combination of the carefully curated home-practice you'll be doing and the specific hypnotherapy sessions we'll do in class sessions mean that your confidence levels grow

You'll be well practiced to get yourself into a deeply relaxed state during your birth.  This will mean your body can soften and relax - rather than tighten and tense (which it will do when your state is one of fear.  If you watch OBEM you'll see what I mean - but if you're pregnant please don't do that because you really don't need that as visual imagery!  Let this be your first instruction on your preparation for a calm birth!)

Your partner receives all these benefits too PLUS training in hypnotherapy skills so they can help you deepen your state of relaxation

What will you learn?

The contents of this course are not just for labour.  They start positively impacting during pregnancy and are of use way beyond birth.  Each session will contain practical advice and demonstrations on how to build your confidence and remain calm and in control.  These skills are fully transferable to other areas of your life (including parenting!)

Benefits

Dates and costs

I totally understand that birth can be a very expensive business and I'm happy to spread payments should this be helpful (I'd also like to offer the view that a hypnobirthing course is a LOT less than many individual 'essential' items of a baby's nursery and is usually a far more useful and long-lasting investment!)

Group and Private courses are face to face.  Held in Stanmer or Portslade.

Group Courses are £250 per couple.  A course is usually 4 sessions of approximately 3 hours each.  A £50 booking fee will secure your booking.

Private Courses are £400 per couple.  The content and the amount of time remains the same but the spacing of the classes and I can if necessary individualise content to your specific needs. I  can also come to you if you'd prefer.

Bespoke Courses.  Please contact me for pricing.  Once I know your needs I'll know how much time.

refreshers for those who have done the course previously - £75 for a 3 hour session or £95 for 2 x 2 hour session.

a 'intense' express course for those who are very limited time-wise
